Description

An instructor is an individual who is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in a particular field of knowledge and has been trained in how to impart that knowledge, skill and ability to someone seeking to learn that subject and demonstrate competency in that skill. This position is critical to MPT’s success as a quality Maritime Training Provider. The Instructor is responsible for the following:

• Prepare classroom for daily training.
• Prepare material for class room use (handouts, tests, videos, etc.).
• Administer tests and/or practical assessments.
• Organize and present prepared approved and prepared instructional materials, supervise organized laboratory and/or practical activities at scheduled times and places using the approved and established lesson plans, instructor guide and student textbook/notetaking guide for the course being taught.
• Record student progress.
• Maintain records of student attendance, student progress, and grade distributions.
• Maintain discipline and order during instructional activities.
• Maintain a safe learning environment.
• Communicate through appropriate channels.
• Participate in special staff meetings and development activities for faculty.
• Read and be familiar with the MPT policies and procedures as defined Employees Handbook and Instructor Handbook.
• Assume other responsibilities as assigned by their respective department head.

Requirements

Ideally, persons seeking to fill this position should be outgoing and confident as well as qualified experts with experience in the field they are assigned to teach. They should, at a minimum:

• Be a citizen of the United States or have legal authorization to work in the United States.
• Hold a valid United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) that includes a license as a Deck Officer (i.e. Operator, Mate, Master, Third Mate, Second Mate, or Chief Mate)
• Experience, or training in effective instructional and assessment techniques.* [MPT may provide this training for selected candidates].
• Have at least one year of shipboard experience sailing as a deck officer on vessels of at least 200 GRT/500 GT. Equivalent military experience in a deck rating of Boatswain Mate or a Survival or Rescue Swimmer is also acceptable. 
• Hold endorsements as Lifeboat Operator and Proficiency in Survival Craft and have experience as deck or engine officer on vessels equipped with SOLAS lifeboats with designated duties as the person in charge of a SOLAS lifeboat or equivalent military experience. 
• Experience on vessels of at least 200 GRT/500 GT with designated duties as the person in charge of SOLAS fast rescue boat operations; or equivalent military or other SOLAS fast rescue boat experience.

*Evidence of training in “effective instructional techniques” may be in the form of performance evaluations that include an evaluation of effectiveness in on-the-job organization and delivery of training and/or a certificate of successful completion from a “train the trainer**” course. A person holding a college degree in education or a related field, a person holding a state certification as a primary or secondary school teacher, or current or former military personnel who hold or have held the designation as Master Training Specialist or Master Trainer will also meet this requirement.

**A “train the trainer” course should be substantially similar to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) model course 6.09, Training Course for Instructors.

In addition to the above minimum the following are preferred, but NOT required:

• Hold a current certification as a First Aid and/or CPR instructor from nationally recognized medical training organization; or be an EMT, Nurse or Medical Doctor; or have equivalent military experience.  
• Have relevant experience in the prevention of, and response to, maritime workplace violence and harassment, including sexual assault and sexual harassment. 
• Experience as a Vessel Security Officer or as a maritime security professional or equivalent military experience. 
• Experience as person in charge of inspecting and maintaining shipboard Fire Fighting Equipment (FFE) or equivalent experience as a professional fire fighter.
• Experience as person in charge of inspecting and maintaining shipboard Life Saving Appliances (LSA).
• Experience in shipboard damage control or equivalent military damage control experience.
• Experience as a USCG-approved Qualified Assessor (QA) for relevant STCW competences.
• Completion of a "Simulator Instructor" course that is substantially similar to IMO Model Course 6.10, Train the Simulator Trainer and Assessor.
